OPT and OPT Extension

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to gain practical work experience in their field of study. STEM OPT extensions provide additional time for qualified graduates.

Key Information

Eligibility

Must be an F-1 student who has been enrolled full-time for at least one academic year and is in valid immigration status.

Application Timeline

Apply up to 90 days before and no later than 60 days after your program end date. STEM extension must be filed before current OPT expires.

Work Requirements

Must work in a position directly related to your major field of study. Unemployment limits apply: 90 days for regular OPT, 150 days with STEM extension.

STEM Extension

Available for degrees on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Employer must be enrolled in E-Verify.

Recent Policy Changes

DHS ended automatic EAD extensions (Oct 2025). DHS proposed replacing Duration of Status with fixed-term admission. USCIS implemented additional review for applicants from certain countries (Dec 2025). Social media screening expanded (Aug 2025).
