Re-entry Permit

A re-entry permit allows lawful permanent residents and conditional permanent residents to travel outside the United States for extended periods (one year or more) without abandoning their permanent resident status.

Key Information

Who Needs It

Permanent or conditional residents planning to be outside the U.S. for one year or more should obtain a re-entry permit. It allows you to apply for admission without needing a returning resident visa.

Physical Presence Requirement

You must be physically present in the United States when you file the application. You must also complete biometrics at a local Application Support Center (ASC) before departing.

Validity Period

For permanent residents, the re-entry permit is valid for two years from the date of issue. For conditional permanent residents, it is also valid for two years from issuance.

Filing Method

Re-entry permits require paper filing by mail. Unlike some advance parole requests, online filing is not available for re-entry permits.

Processing Time

Processing times vary widely, often between 4 and 15 months depending on the service center. Plan ahead and apply well before your intended travel date.

Recent Policy Changes

Filing fee increased to $630 for paper filing as of November 2025. Additional H.R. 1 fee adjustments effective January 1, 2026. Extended absences may still affect naturalization eligibility even with a valid re-entry permit.
